  • Christians and Halloween!

I think that we as Christians have a diverse array of views toward Halloween. It's wild how much tension these views can create. I know Christians who are hugely against celebration of this holiday due to its origins, and I know people who follow Christ who totally enjoy celebrating Halloween. I don't think either viewpoint is necessarily wrong. I think it's up to a child's parental units as to which way they want to go with things. I personally think it's perfectly fine to celebrate it, everything in moderation. Here are some guidelines I would give to parents who choose to let their kids Halloween it up!

    1. Go trick-or-treating with your kids. Maybe even dress up too! It would rock, and it would bring out the kiddo in you!
    2. Act as a crossing guard when your little ones cross streets.
    3. Go to houses and neighborhoods you know well
    4. Check candy BEFORE it's consumed, and AFTER consumption, invite your kiddos to a MANDATORY toothbrush party!
    5. Don't let your kiddo eat all his or her candy at once. Set limits... make it last a long time!
    6. If your kids are followers of Christ, encourage them to share Jesus with the candy-givers!

  • Joshua Not For Visual Learners

I'm reading through Joshua right now. It's not for visual learners. You've got to imagine! Some Bibles have maps of all of the divisions of the land, but not all do. Also, some of the names like Jephunneh and the like are difficult to pronounce when reading aloud. Joshua is maybe not as doctrinal as other books, or as easy to read, but definitely an important book!

  • I Am Gluttonous And Need To Change!

One of my many sins is gluttony. I do not eat a healthy diet, and my portion control is very poor. Tonight, I was planning on eating only one slice of french bread pizza, and saving the other for later, but I had two. Plus I drank chocolate milk, and all of this at like 12:40 a.m, so I guess it wasn't "tonight", but this morning.

I desire to make better choices, but I need your prayers. Being 280 pounds at 5'8", as I am, is not healthy. I'm overly sure that I will not like the complications that come if I continue to do this. I need to eat more fruits and vegetables.

Isn't it weird how guilt just builds following sin? I had ways out, just like 1st Corinthians 10:13 says... but I did not take it... and I am ashamed... I know God forgives, but with my weight the way that it is, I need to make a better effort. I do walk for exercise, but probably not as fast as I should be to be burning calories.

  • Sermon Notes I Think You'll Find Useful!

Pastor Brian Bell of Calvary Chapel Murrieta in California has a great set of sermon notes here.

Sometimes Pastor Brian uses different colors in his sermon notes, so here is a guide

    • Green - Bible Text (within the chapter we are studying)

    • Red - Other Bible Texts(outside the texts we are studying)

    • Brown - Is a Quote from someone.

    • Pink - Highlights questions; or it Intro' a Story I am about to tell.

    • Purple, plum, dark blue - Usually are used to just arrested my eyes attention to a different point in my document.

    • Gold & Orange - Usually are an important point to stress.

Another message archive that I've found is John Piper's. John is the pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minnesota. I've also heard these messages can be found on DesiringGod.org, however I first found them here.

  • Today at Church

One of the churches that I attend is Christ's Covenant Church in Winona Lake, Indiana. This morning's sermon was about the passage in Luke (9:57-62) where Jesus is talking to several people, and is basically saying that nothing should get in the way of following Christ, not even things like burying family members. That's a neat concept, because it shows that, even though we love our families dearly, that Christ must be #1 in our lives.

After the first (9A.M.) service, I checked out the Friendship Ministries class. What that class is, is a class where people with physical and mental disabilities can go and learn about Jesus. My housemate Andrew is one of the leaders, and I enjoyed seeing how it operates. People with physical and mental disabilities DEFINITELY have a place in the church, and too often they are one of the types of people that the church neglects, not always intentionally, but neglects nonetheless, and so it's rewarding to see Christ's Covenant embracing this ministry!
